What Do You Love About Horses?

"Every rider remembers that first moment—the heartbeat of hoofbeats, the unspoken connection, the feeling of really riding. For Evie Price, that moment shaped a lifelong love. So we asked her: What do you love about horses?"

BETWEEN THE EARS

What Do You Love About Horses?

There’s a moment—one that every rider remembers. The first time you feel the rhythm of hoofbeats beneath you, the first time you hold the reins and realize you’re communicating with a thousand-pound animal, not with words, but with energy, balance, trust. For Evie Price, that moment happened when she was just a little girl, and she’s been chasing that feeling ever since.

Horses have a way of staying with us, don’t they? Long after we dismount, long after the barn dust settles on our boots, they live in our hearts, shaping who we are.

“I love horses because they make my inner child so happy,” Evie says. And really, isn’t that the magic of it all? No matter how many years go by, there’s a childlike joy in being around them. The simple happiness of brushing out a tangled mane, of hearing that deep, soft nicker when you walk into the barn.

But horses aren’t just about the perfect rides or the ribbons—those moments that make it to Instagram. The best part of horses is what happens when no one is watching.

“The cuddles after your ride, the bonding, the fact that a horse even wants to spend time with us—it’s incredible. They don’t have to, yet they choose to. That’s what makes them so special.”

Evie’s first love was a horse named Colorado, the kind of horse that every rider wishes for—a teacher, a steady presence, the one who gives you confidence when you’re just starting out. He carried not just Evie, but her little sister too, and there was something deeply meaningful about seeing someone else she loved experience that same magic.

It’s funny how horses become our constants in a world that never stops moving. They ground us, remind us who we are, and somehow, in their silent way, they always seem to know exactly what we need.

“Horses make me feel normal. They’re my constant. No matter what else is going on, I know the barn will always be there, and that feeling of driving up—it’s like heading to Disneyland. That excitement, every single time.”

And the best days? The highs that only another horse girl would understand?

“When you’re so in sync with your horse, when it just clicks—you come out of the ride on cloud nine. There’s nothing like it.”

So what makes someone a horse girl?

It’s not about how often you ride or how many horses you’ve owned. It’s not even about whether you ride at all.

“Being a horse girl is a state of mind. It’s a passion, a love, a connection. If you feel it in your soul, then you’re a horse girl.”

And that’s the beauty of it. No matter where life takes you, once horses have your heart, they have it forever.

This is just the beginning of the "Between the Ears" series—where we go beyond the arena, beyond the competition ring, and into the real stories of riders, their journeys, and the horses who shape them. Stay tuned for our next feature: Between the Ears with Trainer Natasha Pappas, where she’ll share some invaluable advice she has learned throughout her career. This is gonna be a good one.  Can't wait.

For now, we’ll leave you with one question:
What do YOU love about horses?

Drop your thoughts in the comments or share your story with us—because every rider’s journey deserves to be told.

Stephanie and Evie what a fun insightful interview. I look forward to hearing more stories and learn what makes our barn friends passionate about these beautiful animals.
